BGC4T Program

The Building Good Citizens for Texas research based character education program includes:

.

Staff Development:

Building Good Citizens for Texas offers a three-hour interactive staff development opportunity.  This session identifies the need for character education across Texas.   Participants are asked to discuss the situation at the local level, identifying the needs specific to their district.

BGC4T is based firmly on current research, utilizing an integrative program design, as recommended by the Texas legislation and the Journal of Research in Character Education. Resource Guides, available for Elementary, Middle and High School levels are reviewed with a focus on how they may be used to integrate the character message into all school activities. Using suggestions from the Resource Guides as well as strategies in place in a variety of Texas school districts, participants work in teams to develop an Implementation Plan for their particular educational setting.

Activity Worksheets:

As part of our Staff Development opportunity, an extensive list of strategies for character education already in place in Texas schools is presented and discussed. This has proven to be a valuable resource as schools prepare their individual implementation plans.

Many ready-to-use activity sheets are provided.  Examples include crossword puzzles with emphasis on the trait of the month, color sheets, word searches, and Character Bingo.

Resource Guides:

BGC4T offers Resource Guides for Elementary, Middle and High School levels.  These guides have been endorsed by the Texas governor and the Texas Education Agency.

Each guide has a section for each of the nine character traits covered during the school year.  This includes individual and group activities utilizing a wide variety of skills appropriate to the grade level.

The activities in each section are coordinated with the particular TEKS and STAARS objectives.

The guides also contain a Letter to Parents, giving the specific definition of the trait as used in school, and a list of activities to assist parents in encouraging this behavior in the home. This makes it very easy for schools to add the character education program into their newsletters and communicate with the student's parents about character education.
